The Titan is a four-story, 22-unit apartment building in Little Italy, San Diego by Jonathan Segal, FAIA, who served as both developer and general contractor of the project. The property where The Titan now stands was a .02-acre infill parcel with a steep drop at its rear. To get the most out of the tight space and limited budget, Segal got rid of interior corridors and elevators. Instead, each of the 22 lofts opens to the outside. The lofts range from 600 to 1,000 square feet, but feel much larger thanks to oversized windows and 18-foot ceilings that add light and psychological space. The Titan is made up of a two-part façade of rusted steel paired with sleek glass, conceived by Segal after viewing the abstract planes of a Richard Diebenkorn painting.
